ResumoThe National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in a decision having potential impact on pilot hiring, training and scheduling, criticizes a lack of federal and airline controls on flight operations by newly qualified pilots. Among nearly two dozen recommendations from the NTSB was one for the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines to require more than security background checks that would verify a pilot's flight-time, failures, terminations and other disciplinary actions. This recommendation resulted from NTSB findings in an investigation of the crash of Continental Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9-10 at Denver in November 1987. This article also lists other NTSB recommendations and points out that the NTSB will advise the National Fire Protection Association to develop rescue techniques for aircraft that crash in unusual conditions and to investigate the safety of defueling a crashed aircraft while passengers may be on board.
