Resumo

Rail grinding is moving from a technique used after damage such as shelling and corrugation has been identified to a long-term preventive maintenance method that shapes rails before damage has been done. More frequent grinding means less steel is lost on each application. Also, if the rail is well shaped to the wheel, there is less wear and tear. Grinding more frequently, about every 15-30 million gross tons of traffic, can also stop fatigue cracks before they get serious. Canadian Pacific, BNSF, Union Pacific and CSX Transportation are all adopting the frequent grinding approach.
