Resumo

The effects of ingestion of 355 ml of 3 different beverages on GER events and symptomatic perception during 2h periods after ingestion were evaluated: 1) Coke® (carbonated, pH 2.5, caffeine 2.9 mg/oz.)[B1]; 2) Ciel® mineralized water (carbonated, pH 5.5, no caffeine) [B2]; and 3) Lipton® lemon ice tea (non-carbonated, pH 3.7, caffeine 2.5 mg/oz.)[B3].To evaluate GER activity we performed esophageal impedance-pH monitoring and number of reflux episodes (pH < 4), percentage of time of esophageal pH < 4 (%), number of acid and non-acid reflux, heartburn, regurgitation and belching episodes were analyzed during the 2-h pH period Data were analyzed with ANOVA, t test and Friedman test. Results: There was no difference in age (p=0.17),gender (p=0.441) or BMI (p=0.826) between groups. In all of them carbonated beverages (B1 and B2) showed greater number of non-acid reflux episodes (NAR, Table 1) and induce more belching episodes but not more heartburn and regurgitation.Caffeinated non-carbonated beverage (B3) was more associated with acid reflux, longer reflux episodes and more ph < 4 time (p<0.05).HV, EE and NERD subjects had similar findings after consumption of the 3 beverages. However, FH patients had different and non-expected findings such more belching after consumption of B3 (non-carbonated beverage) Conclusions.Based in our results there is no evidence that carbonated beverages induces more GERD symptoms in EE and NERD when compared to controls.Findings in FH subjects confirm that in these patients symptom perception could be related to psychological factors such as hypervigilance or anxiety. Finally, in clinical practice it is important to consider GERD phenotype, gas quantity and acidity grade in a beverage before recommending its consumption or not.Effects of carbonated beverages among groups NAR=NonAcid Reflux Sa1377
