ResumoThis article presents a profile of Vietnam Airlines (VN), focusing on its aggressive fleet expansion program that is coupled with pride and determination to compete with VN's Asian rivals. As the country moves toward a more liberal economy and an emphasis on promoting foreign tourism, the airline still lags behind in its information technology (IT) and maintenance operations, as well as coping with a limited home market. VN covers a domestic network of 16 cities, while it serves 23 cities internationally. Expansion plans to other international locations are discussed, as well as efforts directed at enhancing cargo operations and fleet size. The article also includes a sidebar on the new air services agreement (ASA) between the U.S. and Vietnam which provides for the resumption of direct flights between the two countries.
