ResumoEvidence for the anticarcinogenic activity of the conjugated dienoic derivatives of linoleic acid (CLA) is reviewed. CLA is present in grilled beef, cheese, and related foods. It is also generated endogenously via carbon centered free radical oxidation of linoleic acid. New findings indicate that CLA is a potent antioxidant. CLA may provide a previously unrecognized in situ defense mechanism against membrane attack by oxygen radicals.
