Bay, Hansjorg, and Christof Hamann, eds. Odradeks Lachen: bei Kafka. Freiburg i. Br.: Rombach, 2006. 366 pp. euro42.00 paperback. With the theme Fremdheit bei the editors of this volume have drawn inspiration from the figure of Odradek (Die Sorge des Hausvaters), a creature who encapsulates the puzzling nature of Kafka's fiction, with its constant conflict between literal and figurative meaning, proliferation of themes, and exoticization of the everyday. Within this broad brief, the contributing authors are able both to explore perennial themes Kafka scholarship, such as the practice of writing (Stanley Corngold, Wolf Kittler, Benno Wagner), and disrupt scholarly consensus-such as that around the connection between the Pelzdame of Die Verwandlung and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's Venus itn Pelz (Joachim Pfeiffer sees Sacher-Masoch not as the inspiration for Kafka, but as the object of Kafka's parody). The editors argue that Kafka's use of the strange serves scenarios such as the one depicted Die Sorge des Hausvaters, in denen auf ein Eigenes Konfrontation mit dem Fremden so lange Druck ausgeubt wird, bis es sich selbst fragwurdig und fremd zu werden beginnt (11). This deterritorialization of the self when confronted with the other is a recurrent theme of the volume. Christof Hamann, for example, traces the disappearing identity of Karl Rosmann Der Verschollene until he resorts to the moniker Negro, der im zeitgenossischen Amerika-Diskurs als das schlechthin Fremde konstruiert wird (141). Richard T Gray notes: Das Kafka als Jude unter Deutschen und Deutscher unter Tschechen im Prag Jahrhundertwende seinem Alltagdie Erfahrungdes Fremdbestimmtenerlebte, ist eine Binsenwahrheit Kafka-Forschung (168). The volume does not neglect the Jewish aspect of Kafka's problematization of identity: Ute Gerhard reads the stories Beim Bau chinesischen Mauer and Der Bau the context of the anti-Jewish immigration debates that 1913 culminated the introduction of the ius sanguinis, positing die Grenze zwischen Eigenem und Fremden [sic] als Korpergrenze (72). The confrontation with the mere threat of intruders these stories results a Nomadisierung des Ich im Innern (84). Three interesting contributions depict Kafka as a kind of literary ethnologist. Alexander Honold discusses the forays into Volkerschauen by the animal handler Carl Hagenbeck (whose ship transports Kafka's Rotpeter Ein Bericht fur eine Akademie). …
