Resumoln the frame of Baroque fictional literature, the religious allegorical narrative became refined, with a structure that combined a plot agreable to the senses with a moral purpose. Afier Predestinado Peregrino, by Alexander de Gusmao, and Peregrino da America, by Nuno Marques Pereira, the conventual literary production, by Soror Maria do Ceu and Soror Madalena da Gloria, resorted frequently to allegorical narratives. Using female characters as protagonists, the nove Is of Maria do Ceu construct a universe where the images of the human soul struggle against their earthly frailty before reaching heaven. It is within this context that the novels Enganos do Bosque, Desenganos do Rio, both published in 1741, must be read.
