Resumo

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) whose aims are to promote the value of recorded music, safeguard the rights of record producers and to expand the commercial uses of recorded music. The need for recording companies to find a common negotiating position to present to the Bureau of Societies Administering the Rights of Mechanical Recording and Reproduction (BIEM) was the primary motivation for the formation of IFPI. Membership of IFPI is open to any company, firm, or person producing sound recordings or music videos which are made available to the public in reasonable quantities. IFPI represents its members at three levels - international, regional, and national. IFPI is funded wholly from music industry sources. The primary task of IFPI has been to ensure that copyright protection is improved and updated to meet the challenges posed by new technology. Keywords: BIEM; International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI); nongovernmental organization (NGO); recording companies
