ResumoThe research “The ugly duckling ' and ‘The nightingale and the emperor of China ', by Hans Christian Andersen: the children literature in the 4 class, elementary school” is ruled in the conception of understanding language as a process of human interaction and the reading, as a complex activity, involving aspects not only semantic, but cultural, ideological, philosophical and phonetic. These theoretical conceptions were adopted by two reasons: for being in agreement with what is proposed in the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais de Lingua Portuguesa (2001) and with the objectives of the investigation: 1) to guide the teachers, whom will participate of the research, how to work with the stories of H.C. Andersen in 4 grade the elementary school; 2) to notice if the teacher works with The ugly duckling and The nightingale and the emperor of China and how they develope activities with these fairy tales; 3) to plan and to guide a reading work and production of texts which refers to them and 4) to identify, through a questionnaire, the contributions of this work in related to changing in a pedagogic practice which includes the work with children literatur in classroom. The focus of the study was coming up in relation to: narrative text, classics of the children literature, Hans Christian Andersen and the stories: The ugly duckling” and “The nightingale and the emperor of China.” The research activities were defined by the bibliographical reading and for the field research developed in a public school in Presidente Prudente-SP. The option for the stories happened mainly because: “The ugly duckling” is one of the most well-known stories by H. C. Andersen by Brazilian children and “The nightingale and the emperor of China” because takes part of the collection Literatura em minha Casa and it is not wellknown as “The ugly duckling” by the Brazilian children.
