ResumoRoad mortality of wild boar (Sus scrofa) in salamanca province (NW Spain). Influence of its social behaviour? With 33.5% of the total road collisions, the Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) is the wild ungulate species more frequently killed on the Salamanca province (northern Spanish plateau). An increase in road killings, as well as in hunting bags of the species, is showed during the years 1997-2002. Collisions are produced mainly from September to November, in coincidence with autumn outbreak of the family groups-, most of them are taken along 18.00 h - 01.00 h- with a peak at the 22.00 h- time where most of the young animals are active, and on Sundays (23.86% of accidents). According to estimated wild boar population in the region, road mortality accounts to only to 0.8%, whereas hunting made up to 30%. Croplands and pasture grasslands with evergreen oaks, are the main landscapes where most of the crashes were given (75.7%).
