espanolLa eleccion del cantante Michel Martelly como presidente de Haiti fue un hecho inesperado, en medio de la incierta reconstruccion del pais despues del devastador terremoto de 2010. El nuevo gobierno debera lidiar con un pais �y un Estado� casi destruidos, con la presencia de una fuerza militar de la Organizacion de las Naciones Unidas (onu) y aun preso de la agobiante herencia de medio siglo de desgobierno que incluyo la larguisima dictadura de los Duvalier, ademas de los militares y Aristide. Asi, el nuevo mandatario enfrentara enormes desafios, en el marco de una cuestionada estrategia de cooperacion de la «comunidad internacional», que deberia aumentar sus efectivos civiles, enfocarlos hacia la ayuda para el desarrollo y definir un plan de salida del pais. EnglishThe election of singer Michel Martelly as president of Haiti was an unexpected fact, in the middle of the slow reconstruction of the country after the devastating earthquake of 2010. The new government must lead with a country �and a state� that are almost destroyed, militarily occupied by the United Nations (un) and still a prisoner of the oppressive heritage of half a century of misgovernment which included the long dictatorships of the Duvaliers. Thus the new mandate will face enormous challenges, under a questioned strategy of cooperation by the international community, which should increase its civilian presence and focus on helping development and defining an exit strategy from the country.
