ResumoThis article provides an overview of how airlines have sold tickets to passengers, from the beginning when travelers simply showed up at an airline’s desk at the airport and bought a ticket, to the creation of downtown ticket offices and call centers, to the era of travel agencies, and to the present, when Internet companies like Expedia and Travelocity entered the distribution market. Today, versions of all the above exist according to the author. In recent months, however, JetBlue returned to global distribution systems (GDS), and Southwest broadened its participation in them as ways to bring in higher revenues. The majority of corporate bookings are routed through four GDSs. The author discusses Mexicana, Air Canada, and Royal Air Maroc and their relationships with GDSs.
