ResumoMotions of a small boat in the vicinity of a large ship is complicated because of three kinds of waves which are radiation, diffraction and incident waves. Although some reports have been made on this subject, there are few reports which could grapple with it from the viewpoint of the optimum approaching course to the large ship. In this paper, the authors propose an evaluating method for the approaching course of a small boat which is approaching alongside a large ship in irregular waves. The method proposed here consists of two steps. The first step is the estimation of frequency response functions for the ship motions and the free surface elevation by using the three dimensional integral equation method. The second one is a calculation for the distribution of significant wave height around a ship. We report some results of numerical calculations and discuss the optimun course for small boat to the large ship.
