Resumo

Johann Elert Bode (1747–1826) was born in Hamburg, Germany, the oldest of nine brothers and sisters. As a child he was afflicted with an eye disease that significantly damaged his right eye. He continued to have eye problems the rest of his life. Although his father was a merchant he never attended a formal school. His father taught him the skills of a merchant, hoping he would enter the family business. During his father's illness in 1767 young Bode impressed the doctor, Heinrich Reimarus, with his mathematical skills. Dr. Reimarus introduced Johann Bode to Johann Georg Büsch, a professor of mathematics at the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg. With the assistance of Professor Büsch and his library, Johann Bode would educate himself in mathematics, geography, and astronomy.
