Resumo

The Olympic Swimming Pool of Naples is a brilliant completion of the more urgent sporting facilities required by this city. An outstanding feature of this project is the short time taken to build it, namely, six months. This has been possible in part to the energetic and very carefully planned direction of the work. The main item of interest in this pool (which can hold 400 swimmers comfortably) is the roof. This is a compound structure, covering an area of 6,000 m 2 , without intermediate supports. The resistant elements are made of prestressed concrete, and reinforced concrete foundations. These supports carry two cantilevered arms, one of which is anchored to heavy concrete blocks, 5.70 ms away from the support centerline, and the other, extending inwards, supports at its end the metal girders which span the pool. The total length which is thus spanned is 60.80 ms. The structure and the enclosing material is sufficiently transparent to allow for adequate natural illumination to reach the interior of the building. Thermal insulation and artificial point illumination is also provided.
