ResumoThis chapter explores the social changes that occurred during the sixteenth century in the Izalco region of western El Salvador that during the colonial period formed a part of the audiencia of Guatemala. The focus is on the socioeconomic factors that encouraged and motivated the unusually strong Spanish presence in the Izalco region in the early Colonial period and on the impact of Spanish domination on the indigenous population.
