portuguesE justamente celebre o mapa-mundo desenhado por Piri Reis em 1513, de que se conhece apenas o fragmento atlântico, conservado em Istambul. A sua surpreendente modernidade explica-se sobretudo pelo recurso a fontes de origem iberica, resultantes de quase um seculo de exploracao do Atlântico e de ambas as suas margens por portugueses, espanhois e seus colaboradores. Talvez menos conhecido, mas igualmente relevante, e o «Livro das coisas do mar» preparado na decada de 1520 pelo cartografo turco, que reune preciosas informacoes geograficas e cartograficas sobre o Mediterrâneo, mas tambem sobre muitas outras areas geograficas. No prefacio do seu Kitab-i Bahriye, Piri Reis revela-se es-pecialmente bem informado sobre as exploracoes portuguesas realizadas ao longo da costa de Africa e nos mares orientais, apos as viagens de Bartolomeu Dias e de Vasco da Gama. Sera possivel identificar as fontes textuais e cartograficas portuguesas, ou de origem portu-guesa, de que se tera servido Piri Reis na elaboracao dos seus trabalhos cartograficos? EnglishThe world map drawn by Piri Reis in 1513, of which only the Atlantic fragment kept in Istanbul is known, is justly famous. Its surprising modernity is fully explained by the use of Iberian sources, resulting from nearly a century of exploration of both sides of the At-lantic by Portuguese and Spanish navigators, along with other collaborators. The ‘Book of maritime affairs’, prepared in the 1520s by the Turkish cartographer, gathering precious ge-ographic and cartographic information about the Mediterranean and many other regions, is equally important, although rather less well known. In the foreword to his Kitab-i Bahriye, Piri Reis appears to be especially well informed about Portuguese explorations along the African coast and in the Asian seas, after the voyages of Bartolomeu Dias and of Vasco da Gama. Is it possible to identify the textual and cartographic sources used by Piri Reis in the preparation of both his cartographic works?
