ResumoThe two terms syringomyelia and hydromyelia are frequently used as synonyms or are fused into one expression, syringohydromyelia. Both denote fluid containing cavities within the spinal cord and are distinguished as either ependyma-lined dilatation of the spinal cord central canal (hydromyelia) or glial-lined spinal cord cavitation with or without communication to the central canal (syringomyelia). They represent morphological findings that brought about a considerable spectrum of attempted etiological explanations (2,42,44,52,73,78,116). Besides many pathophysiological interpretations we may encounter a variety of rare conservative (118) and several operative modalities of treatment (11,15,25,30,48,51,58,77,123), all of which reflect the persistent lack of a conclusive answer regarding treatment of spinal cord cavitations.
