ResumoThe Little Abbai, one of the 60 affluents of the lake is usually regarded as the source of the Great Abbai (Blue Nile). It springs lie about 100 km south of the lake. The intrepid Scottish traveller James Bruce saw these springs in 1771 and derided with scorn (1790) their discovery by Portuguese Jesuits, Fr. Pedro Paez in 1613 and later Hieronimo Lobo (B. Tellez 1710, Travels of the Jesuits in Ethiopia). But Fr. Lobo has left us his ‘Breve relacao do Rio Nile’ which, translated by Sir Peter Wyche, was published in London in 1669.
